2.3    SysMan Monitoring and Tuning Applications

The following applications are available from the Monitoring and Tuning application group icon:

See also Monitoring and Tuning on the SysMan Menu.

You also can open these applications from the command line. Each command name is shown in parentheses with the application description.

Kernel Tuner

(dxkerneltuner)

Manages the attributes of loadable kernel subsystems.

Dependencies: None. You do not need to configure anything prior to running Kernel Tuner.

You must be root or have the appropriate privileges to run Kernel Tuner.

To open Kernel Tuner from the command line, enter dxkerneltuner.

For additional information, see the following:

Process Tuner

(dxproctuner)

Displays processes in a selectable sort order, lets you send signals to processes, and lets you change their priorities.

Dependencies: None. You do not need to configure anything prior to running Process Tuner.

You must be root or have the appropriate privileges to affect processes that you do not own and to increase the priority of the processes that you do own.

To open Process Tuner from the command line, enter dxproctuner.

For additional information, see the following:

Performance Manager
(pmgr)

Helps detect and correct performance problems. Tables, graphs, pie charts, and bar charts indicate hundreds of different system values, including the following:

  • CPU performance

  • Memory usage

  • Disk transfers

  • File-system capacity

  • Network efficiency

  • Buffer cache hit rates

  • Cluster-specific metrics

In addition to monitoring, Performance Manager lets you do the following:

  • Archive metrics data to a file and play it back, showing resource usage trends and historical analysis

  • Run performance analysis and system management commands (yours and those supplied with Performance Manager) on multiple nodes simultaneously

  • Add your own administration tasks to the extensible GUI

Dependencies: None. You do not need to configure anything prior to running Performance Manager.

Performance Manager is a layered product; therefore, it is not necessarily included with your system. You must have the Performance Manager software subset installed in order to use Performance Manager.

You must be root or have the appropriate privileges to use Performance Manager effectively.

To open Performance Manager from the command line, enter pmgr.

For additional information, see the following:

  • Performance Manager release notes

  • pmgr(8) reference page

Class Scheduler

(sysman class_sched)

Allocate system resources so that the most important work gets the required percentage of processing time. Users, groups, process groups, process ids, and sessions can be collected into a scheduling class that is allocated a percentage of the CPU time.

NOTE: Class Scheduler is also available on the SysMan Menu.

For additional information, see the following:

Create Configuration Report
(sysman config_report)

Creates a system configuration and analysis report, using sys_check to gather the specified information, and reports the hardware and software configuration of the running system to an output file coded in HTML for viewing with a web browser. The application also can perform a basic analysis of the operating system parameters and, depending on the advanced options chosen, warn if it detects any problems.

Dependencies: None. You do not need to configure anything prior to running Create Configuration Report

You must be root or have the appropriate privileges to use Create Configuration Report effectively.

To open Create Configuration Report from the command line, enter sysman config_report.

For additional information, see the following:

Create Escalation Report
(sysman escalation)

Creates files for problem reporting. Create Escalation Report gathers all the crash data files on the system and the user-specified escalate_vmunix and escalate_vmzcore to generate the escalation report.

Dependencies: None. You do not need to configure anything prior to running Create Escalation Report

You must be root or have the appropriate privileges to use Create Escalation Report effectively.

To open Create Escalation Report from the command line, enter sysman escalation.
