2.2    SysMan Daily Administration Applications

The Daily Administration applications are used for frequently performed system management tasks such as managing NFS exports, adding and deleting users, and so on.

Use the following procedure to access the SysMan daily administration applications described in this section:

  1. Click on the SysMan Application subpanel on the CDE front panel.

  2. Double click on the Daily Admin application group icon.

  3. Double click on the SysMan daily administration application icon for the application that you want to open.

From SysMan Setup, you can access License Manager and Account Manager (a subset of the daily administration applications) in addition to all of the configuration applications and various setup scripts.

The following daily administration applications are available from the Daily Admin application group icon:

You also can open these applications from the command line. Each command name is shown in parentheses with the application description.

Account Manager

(dxaccounts)

Use Account Manager to manage user and group accounts on your system. It operates on either base security level systems or Enhanced Security level systems.

See also Accounts on the SysMan Menu.

Use Account Manager to do the following:

  • Create and modify users

  • Create and modify groups

  • Lock or unlock accounts

  • Change the password for selected users

  • Open multiple views and manage the accounts by dragging icons between views

Use Account Manager to manage both the local and Network Information Service (NIS) account databases.

When Advanced Server for UNIX is installed, use SysMan to manage PC user accounts and PC groups.

NIS is used to manage user and group accounts centrally in a network environment. It enables participating systems to share a common set of password and group files. NIS uses a client-server model. To make changes to the NIS databases, you must run Account Manager on the machine designated as the NIS master. When running Account Manager on a NIS client, you can examine NIS accounts but you cannot make any modifications to them.

Dependencies: None. You do not need to configure anything prior to running Account Manager.

You must be root or have the appropriate privileges in order to modify the system's account databases.

To open Account Manager from the command line, enter dxaccounts.

For additional information, see the following:

Archiver

(dxarchiver)

Provides a graphical user interface for the following tasks:

  • Creates and reads tar, cpio, and pax archives

  • Retrieves multiple files from a single, named archive file or input device such as a tape or diskette

  • Copies and stores multiple files to a single, named archive file or output device such as a tape or diskette

  • Uncompresses incoming archive files and compresses newly-created files

Dependencies: Input and output devices such as tape or diskette must be attached physically to the dxarchiver client machine (the machine that is running dxarchiver).

You must be root or have the appropriate privileges to copy files that you do not own and to restore files to directories owned by other users (or root).

To open Archiver from the command line, enter dxarchiver.

For additional information, see the following:

Audit Manager

(sysman auditconfig)

Configures the audit subsystem.

See the auditconfig(8) reference page

Display Window

(dxdw)

Provides a graphical user interface (GUI) for running commands at intervals and then storing and printing the results.

Dependencies: None. You do not need to configure anything prior to running Display Window.

You can run Display Window without root privileges.

To open Display Window from the command line, enter dxdw.

For additional information, see the following:

Event Viewer

(sysman event_viewer)

Event Viewer is the portion of EVM, an event management system, that establishes a retrieving client to view events stored in the log files.

Event View is also available from the SysMan Menu.

Dependencies: None. You do not need to configure anything prior to running Event View.

For additional information, see Event Viewer Help

File Sharing

(dxfileshare)

Accesses remote files and exports local files using NFS. Displays locally and remotely shared file systems and allows the user to share and unshare file systems recognized by the network or residing locally.

Dependencies: Network interfaces must be up and running for the system to be configured as an NFS server or client. (Use Network Configuration to configure each network interface.)

You must be root or have the appropriate privileges to share local file systems.

To open File Sharing from the command line, enter dxfileshare.

For additional information, see the following:

Host Manager

(dxhosts)

Displays and manages icons for hosts known to the local system and also for user-specified hosts. Administers access from other machines to the local display. Provides quick remote logins and remote execution of applications.

You can do the following:

  • Log into the remote hosts

  • Run applications on the remote hosts

  • Enable and disable remote-host access to the local X display

  • Enable and disable global access to the local X display

Dependencies: The application must be run on the local host (console) to modify the local X display.

You must be root or have the appropriate privileges to run Host Manager.

To open Host Manager from the command line, enter dxhosts.

For additional information, see the following:

License Manager

(dxlicenses)

Adds, lists, and deletes software product licenses.

You must add the Product Authorization Keys (PAKs) purchased with this system so that users can log in and access licensed software packages.

PAKs are included with your distribution kit so that you can register licenses for the system and other products. You must register and load these license PAKs, using License Manager or the lmf command.

Dependencies: None. You do not need to configure anything prior to running License Manager.

You must be root or have the appropriate privileges to run License Manager.

To open License Manager from the command line, enter dxlicenses.
