1.1    Opening SysMan Station

You can run SysMan Station on an X Windows display, directly on a PC, or as a Java applet in a Web browser.

Running SysMan Station in a Web browser imposes additional browser-related security restrictions, which limit communication between SysMan Station and arbitrary hosts. Therefore, do not run SysMan Station in a Web browser when:

See the Browser Requirements and Restrictions section of the SysMan Home Page http://hostname:2301/SysMan_Home_Page (where hostname is the host name for your system). The insightd daemon must be running on the host system to run SysMan Station from a browser.

Additional considerations to help you choose the most suitable way to run SysMan Station as well as links to specific opening instructions follow.

Connection Speed

When managing from a PC connected via a slow network link, it is recommended that you download and install the SysMan Station PC kit rather than running SysMan Station in a Web browser. On a slow dial-up line, it can take up to 10 minutes to download the SysMan Station Java applet. See the SysMan Home Page at http://hostname:2301/SysMan_Home_Page for more information.

When managing from a Tru64 UNIX system connected via a slow network link, use the sysman -station command to connect to the remote node instead of using a Web browser.

Managing Multiple Versions of Tru64 UNIX

The SysMan Station bundled with a specific Tru64 UNIX release can also be used to manage systems running the previous version of the operating system and the next shipping version of the operating system.

For example, SysMan Station included with Tru64 UNIX Version 5.1 can manage both Version 5.0A systems and Version 5.1A systems.

If you are managing a set of Tru64 UNIX systems with a large version skew, then using a Web browser is convenient since you are guaranteed to be running theSysMan Station client appropriate for that version of Tru64 UNIX.
