Subnet Parameters

A subnet is a segment of a single logical network that has been divided into smaller physical networks to simplify routing. A Subnet address is used when you want to set up a configuration for a group of clients.

At the server computer, you enter information to add and customize subnets to your network in the Subnets tab.

Why use subnet parameters?

For DHCP, there are primarily two ways of assigning configuration parameters to DHCP clients. You can assign parameters to a specific client or to a group of clients.

If you are not subnetting, for example, if you are using standard Class A, B or C addressing, then you group the clients on a per-network basis instead of per-subnet. Each client within this group will be configured with similar parameters, for example, DNS domain name or DNS servers.

You are not required to change every value for the parameters in the Subnets tab for JOIN to work. However, if you want to specifically configure JOIN to use a unique aspect of your network configuration, the parameter values need to be changed to reflect the appropriate network settings.

Configuring a subnet

  1. Click the Subnets tab.
  2. Choose DHCP Parameters from the drop-down list.
  3. Choose [New Record].
  4. Choose Name parameter from the Name/ID Parameters menu and enter a subnet name (i.e, Subnet64) in the Value(s) field.
  5. Under Key Parameters, choose Net or Subnet IP Address, then enter the IP address that identifies the subnet portion of the network.
  6. Enter information for the remaining parameters, as appropriate.
Note: For detailed information about these parameters refer to Parameter Descriptions.
  7. Choose Update from the File menu. The new configuration takes effect immediately.

    Removing a record

    1. Choose a subnet entry.
    2. Click Delete. Changes to the database take effect immediately.
