SHUTDOWN(8) SHUTDOWN(8)

NAME
shutdown - bring the system down.

SYNOPSIS
       shutdown [options] TIME

DESCRIPTION
shutdown brings the system down in a safe way.

TIME may have	different formats, the most common is simply the word
'now' which will bring the system down immediately. Other valid for‐
mats are +m, where m is the number of minutes to wait until shutting
down and hh:mm which specifies the time on the 24hr clock. A	single
number will be treated as the number of seconds before shutting down.

OPTIONS
       -f, --force
Forces the execution. This can cause applications to lose data.

       -h, --halt
The system will shutdown and	power off. This is the default
action. The system must support the power-off feature, but most
	      systems do.

       -s, --shutdown
Same as --halt. Here for compatibility with the Windows shutdown
	      command line tool.

       -r, --reboot
The system will shutdown and then restart.

       -b, --hibernate
The system will suspend to disk. The system must support the
	      hibernate feature.

       -p, --suspend
The system will suspend to RAM. This is also known as sleep or
standby. The system must support the suspend feature.

       -c, --cancel
Aborts the execution of formerly started shutdown or reboot.

       -a, --abort
Same as --cancel. Here for compatibility with the Windows shut‐
	      down command line tool.

       -x, --exitex
	      Use ExitWindowsEx rather than InitiateSystemShutdownEx.

--help Display a help text and exit.

       --version
	      Display version information and exit.
