DESCRIPTION
Insight Manager is a Web-based utility that enables you to look across
a heterogeneous computing environment and access information about any
device connected to the network. Devices can be computer systems, net‐
worked printers, or network components such as routers. You can obtain
information about the configuration of systems and their components or
peripherals and, in some cases, perform certain administrative tasks
such as asset management, asset security, work load management, and
event management.
Web-based enterprise management (WBEM) protocols are able to communi‐
cate among the following operating environments in addition to Tru64
UNIX: OpenVMS, IBM OS/2, Microsoft Windows 2000(TM), Windows NT(TM),
Windows 98(TM), Windows 95(TM), Novell NetWare, SCO OpenServer Release
5, and SCO UnixWare 7.
Insight Manager features are fully implemented in some operating envi‐
ronments, but are not yet implemented in others. This means that you
can use many features on Windows NT(TM) systems, but you cannot use
certain features on Tru64 UNIX. On a Tru64 UNIX system, you can use
the Management Agents to monitor devices, but you must invoke the Sys‐
Man Menu or SysMan Station to perform configuration tasks. Insight Man‐
ager provides a consistent wrapper for SysMan, enabling you to manage
supported systems from a web browser.
Insight Manager XE is a software console that provides full administra‐
tive services for Windows NT. It is a server that can communicate with
other devices in the local area network or domain that run the Manage‐
ment Agents (daemons).
A device must have an operating environment that is recognized by
Insight Manager to be able to manage it using WBEM. Such an operating
environment must be able to communicate device information to the WBEM
network, and to receive and execute instructions sent from other
(authorized) devices in the WBEM network.
The operating environments must be able to run Management Agents, which
communicate with each other using a standard protocol. Devices, and
their operating environments, provide information about hardware and
software status using a data model, such as a Management Information
Base (MIB) and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). These can be
thought of as a database of objects, with attributes and values, repre‐
senting the manageable components of a device.
You can configure a system to participate in auto-discovery, which
allows any Management Agent to discover any other Management Agent in
the local network domain. This feature is turned off by default. The
system with the lowest numerical value for its IP address is the master
for the subnet.
Configuration
The Management agents (daemons) are configured by default when you
install the operating system and are started automatically when the
system boots. The Web and threshold agents are initialized during
transition to run level 3; the initialization script is located in
/sbin/rc3.d/S50insightd. This script runs /usr/sbin/insightd,
/usr/sbin/sysman_hmmod, /usr/sbin/config_hmmod, and
/usr/sbin/cpqthresh_mib and prints a boot-time message at the console
when the agent is started successfully.
The SNMP subagents /usr/sbin/os_mibs and /usr/sbin/cpq_mibs also are
invoked during transition to run level 3 and are invoked by the
/sbin/rc.3d/S49snmpd script. To test that the system is properly con‐
figured, enter the following commands:

You can disable the Management Web Agent through the Set Up Insight
Manager system management task, which can be launched through the Sys‐
Man Menu or the SysMan Station. See sysman(8) for more information.
You should configure the password settings for the Insight Manager
administration account when you first use it. The procedure is
described in the section of this reference page titled “Account Login
home page.”

tation web site for information on configuring SNMP so that the admin‐
istrator can set thresholds.
Browser Requirements
The minimum browser requirements include support for tables, frames,
Java, JavaScript, and the Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.1. Additional
browsers, or the browsers mentioned, used with different operating sys‐
tems, may or may not work correctly, depending upon their specific
implementations of the required browser technologies.
The requirements are TCP/IP and one of the following browsers:

You must turn on the following options so that the Management Agents
work properly: Enable Java Enable JavaScript Accept all cookies or
Accept cookies originating from the same server as the page
being viewed
Configuring the Java Plug-in for Netscape
You must install the Java plug-in to invoke the SysMan Menu or SysMan
Station as Java applets using Netscape. If you attempt to run an applet
such as SysMan Menu before installing the Java plug-in, the browser
opens a new web page in a separate window but is not able to complete
the operation. Close the new window.
The Java plug-in shipped with the operating system is designed to work
only with Netscape on this release of Tru64 UNIX. If you are using Net‐
scape on another platform, other Java plug-ins might be available for
the user environment of your choice. See the home page for your
browser. Only the Netscape browser is identified as the supported
browser and has been tested for this release.
The procedure to install the Java plug-in is described in detail in the
web page at /usr/share/sysman/web/plugin.html, which is displayed auto‐
matically when you first attempt to use the Java applets. Print the
page as you will need to restart your browser during the installation
and configuration of the plug-in.
Using Insight Manager
You may connect to the Management Agents of any system in the local
network domain that is running the Management Agents.
Connect your web browser to port 2301 on any such system in the local
area network as follows:

You also can specify the TCP/IP address in place of a fully qualified
host name, as in the following example.

Connecting your web browser to port 2301 launches the Device Home Page
of the specified system.
Device Home Page
Successfully connecting to port 2301 displays the Web-based Management
Device Home Page. This page provides links to available Web-enabled
services as well as a Refresh link that reloads the The Device Home
page. The Device Home page, and the links from it will differ in con‐
tent from the home page on other systems, such as a PC running Windows
NT.
Anonymous access to Web-enabled services is available without logging
in when the Device Home Page is launched for the first time. To log in
as a different user, select the Anonymous link.

Each of these web pages are described in the following sections.
Online help is available for any Management Agents web page; select the
question mark (?) icon to invoke it. This icon is a question mark in a
triangle, located at the top of the page.
Management Agents Home Page
The Management Agents page provides detailed information on the status
of a device, its operating system, and any device subcomponents that
can be seen by the Insight Manager agent. If the device is a computer,
a subcomponent can be a mass storage peripheral, such as a hard disk.
This web page is divided into three frames: The Title frame contains a
legend of color-coded icons that describe the device and component sta‐
tus and the following links that can be selected to display more infor‐
mation in the Summary (main) page: Invokes the web-based help page
Returns to the Summary (main) frame Returns to the Device Home page
Enables you to configure the presentation of device data, and set val‐
ues such as the refresh interval The Navigation Frame, located below
the Title Frame on the left side of the browser window, lists all of
the subsystems with components that are available for this device. The
content of this frame is dependent on what data can be provided by the
device to Management Agents. Typical contents for a device that is part
of a computer system are as follows: Provides links to information on
the system type, the main CPU board, and the operating system software.
Provides links to information on the disk devices and current alloca‐
tions of disk space in use by file systems. Also included is informa‐
tion on device controllers, such as SCSI controllers. If you select a
SCSI controller, you can display the buses and any disk devices con‐
nected to a bus. In turn, you can select an individual disk, tape, and
CD-ROM, and display properties of that device. Provides links to
information on the network interfaces and any other communications
interfaces that are configured, such as a serial line interface. You
can obtain information about the device, such as its device type, phys‐
ical address, settings, and network statistics. Provides links to
information on the CPU utilization with aggregate load for the past 1,
5, 30, and 60 minutes. Provides links to information on environmental
conditions such as the status of the environmental monitoring subsystem
(if configured on the host), including power supply, system tempera‐
ture, and fan status. You also can display the log of start-up messages
that was saved when the system was last booted. The Summary frame is
the main frame. The information for any links selected in the preceding
frames will be displayed here. When you first access the Management
Agents page, this frame contains information that enables you to iden‐
tify the device type and model, its physical and network locations, and
its general status. Use the Summary link in the Management Agents frame
to display this default information.
Use the question mark (?) icon in the frame's banner heading to
access the Management Agents web-based documentation to provide
you with more information on all the Insight Manager pages.
Tru64 UNIX Configuration Report Home Page
On Tru64 UNIX systems, the configuration report is created by the
sys_check utility, which provides a system census report for the local
host. If a report has not been created, you can choose to launch the
utility and create a first report. Note that the report can take up to
an hour to generate, and may affect system performance.
If an existing report is found, the Configuration Report page is dis‐
played and you can browse its content. The report is useful for detect‐
ing system configuration and tuning problems, log file and event file
settings, and general configuration information. This report is also of
use when troubleshooting system problems and can be used with the Man‐
agement Agents Home Page to resolve such system problems.

information.
Tru64 UNIX SysMan Home Page
This provides links to the SysMan Menu and SysMan Station for managing
Tru64 UNIX systems.
You can opt to launch the SysMan Menu or the SysMan Station. When
using Netscape, you need the Java plug-in as described in the Browser
Requirements section of this reference page.
You are prompted for the name and password of an authorized account.
Because the SysMan suite is run as a Java applet, you cannot close or
otherwise use the associated browser window. If you attempt to do this,
the Java applet also will be closed.
You also can run any SysMan task from any networked PC using a browser
without the need to install the SysMan Menu and the SysMan Station
client PC software.
Access Home Page
The Access home page provides links to related web pages including the
home page.
You can access this page by selecting the Web-Based Management banner
at the top of the Device home page.
WBEM Login Home Page
You can log in using one of three provided accounts (User, Operator, or
Administrator) and their default passwords. For more information, see
the section titled “Security” in the web based help.
To chang the default passwords, select the changed link in the follow‐
ing sentence, located on the right side of the WBEM Login Home Page.
The Password for a login account may be changed at any time by an
Account Administrator.

WEBM Device Options Home Page
This web page contains options that can be set by the administrator to
control access to Insight Manager. The options are: Enabling this
option allows nonprivileged users to view devices and device data. This
option is turned on in the default configuration. Use this option with
care. Even restricted view-only access to your computing environment
might not be acceptable because it reveals the names and network
addresses of systems. Enabling this option allows any user with access
to the local console to perform administrative tasks. This option
should be selected with care due to the security implications. This
option is turned off by default. When enabled, this option deletes
automatically user directories that have not been accessed for a speci‐
fied number of days. This option is turned on and set to 30 days by
default. When enabled, the local server participates in auto-discovery
of any local hosts running the Insight Manager agent. Enter a time in
minutes to control the frequency of auto-discovery updates. Use this
option to prevent auto-discovery of inappropriate systems. This option
is turned off by default. When enabled, the local server participates
in auto-discovery as a potential master node. Use this option to pre‐
vent inappropriate systems from becoming the master device in a WBEM
network. This option is turned off by default.
You can access this web page by selecting the text link, Options, on
the Device Home Page.
WEBM Active Devices home page
This web page lists all devices found in the local WBEM network when
HTTP auto discovery is enabled in the WEBM Device Options home page,
including the Insight Manager XE Servers known to the system as well as
devices that the system has detected on the network.
You can access any of the listed systems by selecting the corresponding
link. The system's device home page is displayed in the browser.
You can access this web page by selecting the text link, Devices, on
the Device Home Page.
Devices
Two devices have special status on the web-based network: The Windows
NT server that is running the XE management console. This system must
be configured with the Insight Manager XE software, and will enable
many of the remote administrative services. The XE server has a port
address of :280, and you connect to this server from your browser by
specifying the URL as follows:
http://system_name:280
Note that a Insight Manager XE server is not necessary for peer-
to-peer administration of Tru64 UNIX systems; you can view sys‐
tem status and perform administrative tasks using the SysMan
Menu and the SysMan Station in such an environment. The master
device, which polls all other available devices for their status
and data, stores it in a master record, and makes the master
record available to any other device. This device is always the
one with the lowest local TCP/IP network address (in the format
110.222.333.110). An important consideration here is that you
must assign this number to a system that is capable of handling
the WBEM traffic. If the device with the lowest TCP/IP address
becomes unavailable for any reason, the device with the next
lowest TCP/IP address becomes the master. All other devices are
slaves.
