Known
Problems and Solutions
-
Feature: How to
set Netscape 6.2.3 as the system's default Web client instead of Netscape
Communicator.
By default, Netscape
Communicator is started when the Netscape icon on the CDE Desktop Personal
Applications Subpanel is selected, or when the /usr/bin/X11/netscape command is
entered in a terminal window. Netscape 6.2.3 contains a shell script
that allows you to choose the system's default Web client.
Solution/Workaround:
Login as root and
execute the /usr/opt/netscape6/set_default_client script from a shell prompt.
This script will prompt you to choose the default Web client for the system.
By choosing Netscape 6, the default web client for the system will be set
to Netscape 6.2.3. Netscape Communicator may still be started by entering
/usr/bin/X11/netscape4.
-
Problem: Missing
LDAP features in the Address Book.
Unlike Netscape
Communicator, Netscape 6.2.3 does not have support for searching and displaying
LDAP data from it's Address Book. These features will be provided in a
future version. Netscape 6.2.3 does support e-mail address completion from
LDAP server data.
Solution/Workaround:
Continue to use the
Address Book in Netscape Communicator if you need to be able to search
and display LDAP data from the Address Book.
-
Problem: Missing
S/MIME support in Mail and News.
Unlike Netscape
Communicator, Netscape 6.2.3 Mail and Newsgroup components do not have S/MIME support.
Solution/Workaround:
Continue to use
Netscape Communicator if you need these features. S/MIME support is
planned for a future release.
-
Problem: Netscape
6.2.3 displays improperly on an X server with only PseudoColor visual classes.
Although
Netscape 6.2.3 will run on an X server with only PseudoColor visual classes
available, it has not been qualified in the PseudoColor visual class. Its
user interface does not display properly in the PseudoColor visual class.
The most obvious effects are dithering of the background skin, fonts, and
images, and images display in incorrect colors.
Solution/Workaround:
Use a display
card that supports the TrueColor visual class with a minimum of a 16-bit
depth. 24-bit TrueColor is recommended. Depending on the graphics card
you have installed, you may also need to update the /var/X11/Xserver.conf
file to enable support for the TrueColor visual class in the X server.
For example, the line at the bottom of the file might look like the following
after it has been modified to support 16-bit TrueColor visual class on
a 1280x1024 resolution screen:
-pn
-vclass TrueColor -depth 16 -screen 1280x1024
Use the xdpyinfo(1X)
command to determine what visual classes your X server supports. Netscape
6.2.3 will always use the best matching X visual class available.
-
Problem: The
Adobe Acrobat plugin for Netscape Communicator will not work.
Netscape
6.2.3 will not load the Adobe Acrobat plugin that works with Netscape Communicator.
Solution/Workaround:
Use Netscape Communicator to view PDF documents using the Adobe Acrobat
plugin.
-
Problem: Netscape
hangs while downloading a file or does not download the entire file.
Netscape 6.2.3 downloads files to a temporary file in the /tmp directory
before moving the file to the destination directory and filename entered
by the user. This behavior can cause the filesystem where the /tmp directory
resides to fill up. It can cause the client to hang, file system full errors on the
console, incomplete file downloads, and Event Manager file system full events.
This problem is platform independent and "Critical" Bugzilla defects have
already been logged (69938, 128907, and 114877).
Solution/Workaround:
Use Netscape Communicator to download files. Or, before starting the Netscape,
set the TMPDIR environment variable to point to a directory on a filesystem with enough
free space available to store the content you will be downloading.
