Welcome to the Compaq Tru64 UNIX System Management Page

System Management for Tru64 UNIX

Managing Compaq Tru64 UNIX Systems

Systems running Compaq Tru64 UNIX are managed using the SysMan suite of tools. Two complementary applications, the SysMan Station and the SysMan Menu, provide centralized access to the SysMan suite.

The SysMan Station displays a graphical layout of a system's hardware and other managed items. It provides access to the comprehensive SysMan suite of system management tools.

Alternatively, the SysMan Menu provides an easy-to-use menu of system management tasks. It is a quick and simple way to access the subset of SysMan tools that can be run in three environments: on a terminal, in a web browser, or on an X-capable display.

Additional information:

Managing Tru64 UNIX with a Web Browser

If you are viewing this web page with Netscape on Tru64 UNIX or with Netscape or Internet Explorer on a Windows PC, you can run
SysMan Station or SysMan Menu with the browser.

With the browser, you cannot manage a TruCluster, nor can you manage a system other than the one Tru64 UNIX system serving you this page.

It takes about 10 minutes to start SysMan Station or Menu with a browser and a 28.8 Kbps modem connection. If you frequently perform management tasks or manage remote systems or TruClusters, you should use the SysMan client software for Compaq Tru64 UNIX or for the PC.

On Tru64 UNIX, you must use the default browser, Netscape 4.76. The SysMan applications cannot be run with the Netscape 6.2.1 browser which also ships on Tru64 UNIX V5.1B.

On a PC running Microsoft Windows, the browser must support a fully compatible Java 1.1.8 environment. Examples of such browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer V4.0 Service Pack 1 or higher and Netscape Navigator V4.x with the java 1.1.3 plug-in.

Tru64 UNIX SysMan Client Software

Rather than running SysMan Station or SysMan Menu with the Netscape Browser, you can run them directly from the Tru64 UNIX command line:

# sysman -station
# sysman

Or, on a Tru64 UNIX workstation running the Common Desktop Environment (CDE), start the applications:

SysMan Station Icon by clicking the SysMan Station icon on the root user's front panel, or
SysMan Menu Icon by clicking the SysMan Station icon or the SysMan Menu icon in the System_Admin group displayed by clicking the Application Manager on the front panel.

Only SysMan Station can manage remote systems. From the File menu, select the "New Connections..." dialog to establish a remote connection.

PC SysMan Client Software

Rather than running SysMan Station or SysMan Menu with the Netscape or Internet Explorer browsers, you can run them directly on the PC with the SysMan PC client software. After a single download and install of the software, you can manage multiple remote Tru64 UNIX systems and TruClusters.

To install the SysMan Station client software on your PC, select "Run..." from the Start menu on the Windows toolbar and run the downloaded file.
