Configure with xjoin

This chapter explains how to use the JOIN graphical user interface (GUI), xjoin to configure clients.

Starting the JOIN GUI

  1. Login as root.
  2. Enter:
          # /opt/join/xjoin

Warning messages?

If you see warning messages such as

"Warning: ... found while parsing '<Key>osfPageRight:page-right()'"
check that the file /usr/lib/X11/XKeysymDB has OSF keysyms defined. (Search for entries that begin with OSF.) If /usr/lib/X11/XKeysymDB does not contain OSF keysyms, append the JOIN information to the file by typing:

   # cat /opt/join/XKeysymDB >> /usr/lib/X11/XKeysymDB

Working in the JOIN window

Along the top of the JOIN window are tabs. Each represents a category of parameters that you set to configure computers on your network:

Choose a tab for the category of parameters you want to specify. The window for each tab is divided into three parts:

  1. On the left is the list of items that are configured for that category. The list always contains a [New Record] item to configure another machine. Choose an item from this list to enter or view its parameters.
  2. In the middle is the list of parameters for the selected item, along with the current specification or setting. Choose a parameter to enter or change the specification or setting.
  3. On the right are the values for the selected parameter. Values can be descriptive text (such as an IP address), time (in hours, minutes, and seconds), or a true/false value.

If there is more than one value field for a parameter, press Tab to move between the fields. To delete information in a field, select the text, then click Delete.

Saving information

If you add or revise information in a field, you need to save the information using one of the following methods:

  1. Choose Update from the File menu
  2. Choose Exit from the File menu, then choose Save and Exit.

Adding new records

For some categories, you can add more than one record, such as when you are adding certain client configurations. When you want to add a new record, select [New Record] from the list on the left side of the window. If there is only one possible record for a subject, [New Record] does not appear after the first server is configured.

Printing records

Choose Print from the File menu to print the contents of the current record.

Exiting xjoin

Choose Exit from the File menu.

If you have any unsaved changes you will be prompted to save the current configuration. Choose Save and Exit to keep the changes, or Exit with No Save to discard the changes.
