Frequently Asked Questions, answered by the GM's themselves.

1. So, what exactly is New Reno RPG?

New Reno is a chat-based Role Playing Game, set in the city of New Reno from the PC game Fallout 2 but set 20 years after the end of FO2. You register an original character, and you can go on quests to earn experience points and money to level up, buy new weapons and armour, and learn new skills for your character. You can also participate in 'duels' to pit yourself against other player characters. It is very non-linear- you have the freedom to make decisions for your character like you do for yourself every day in real life.

2. Is it anything like Dungeons and Dragons?

In the sense that you create and adventure with your own original character, then yes. However, the dice system and stats systems are different from Dungeons and Dragons rules and it is NOT a medieval game. See the rules section for clarification.

3. So where is New Reno played at? IRC? Message Board? How do I get there?

New Reno is played over IRC (mIRC, pIRCH, etc). The server is DarkMyst (irc.darkmyst.org, port 6667). To get there you must have some type of IRC client to connect to the Moyind server. If you already know how to operate mIRC, connect to the server and chat away in the main room #New_Reno, or the OOC room #Vault_13. If you don't know how to operate mIRC, click here for a brief guide to using IRC.

4. What's the basic setting for New Reno RPG?

New Reno is a crime-ridden, lawless mob town set in the post-nuclear wastelands of California. It is a city full of drugs, prostitution, mob-rule, murder, thievery, gambling and grime. It is a very dark city, unfriendly, where most people would slit their own mama's throat for a nickel. It's a city full of badasses and mafiosos who won't hesitate to shoot you in the face as opposed to stabbing you in the back. You have to watch what you say and watch where you step because a wrong move or a wrong look will have you on the wrong end of a gun barrel. For more information, see the Settings section.

5. How can I become a GM?

First off, never ever apply to be a GM if you are just joining this RPG. If you want to become a GM, start off by RPing well and obeying the rules. Don't even hint that you want to be a GM, just impress us by good conduct, creativity and excellent RPing. After you have stuck around for a while, you can contact GMLoki, GMoxie, and/or GMNavi, stating that you want to be a GM, and they will consider your application. Part of the application will be one or more PQ's (Player Quests) that you run that represents your GMing abilities.

6. Why should I play New Reno?

You should play New Reno because it is the ultimate badass city with a great system, kickass GMs, set in the world of one of the greatest PC RPGs in history, Fallout.

7. Skipped purposefully.

Yes it was.

8. What's the deal with the stats and dice? Is there any free form?

Yes. Most everything in the main room is completely freeform outside of special circumstances (assassinations, building bombs or making drugs) that require rolls. Stats and dice are the be-all end-all in quests and duels, however they do not have the same ultimate bearing in freeform. BUT, abide by the stats when freeforming. If you have an agility of 5, you're not going to be outrunning deathclaws and leaping tall buildings in a single bound.

9. When can I start playing?

You can start playing whenever you want to. Your sheet will be posted immediately after you register it, but if you can't decide exactly how you want to build your character, abide by the Unregistered Character rules until you regster.

10. I just purchased an item, but it's not on my sheet yet. Can I still use it?

Our updates system uses a php script to automatically update everything, so if you purchase and item and it doesn't appear on your sheet, there must be some kind of error. It will state when you do not have enough money to purchase an item, so if you get some other kind of error message, log what it is and contact GMLoki, GMoxie, or GMNavi. You can contact these GMs if there are any other issues with item purchasing. In the mean time, no, you can't use any items not listed on your sheet.

11. Who do I talk to about anything in the shops?

Any of the GMs can help you with your questions.

12. Who do I talk to about any of the rules and stats?

Again, any of the GMs can help you with your questions.

13. Who do I talk to about skills and specialties?

Once more, any of the GM's can help you out here.

14. Who do I talk to about anything else?

Surprise! Any of the GMs can help you with your questions. If you have an interpersonal issue, you can contact any of the GMs by PM in the channel, by e-mail (NewRenoRPG@gmail.com), or by PM on the forums.

15. Can I start my own gang?

Yes. There are gang rules in place and advanced ones being worked on currently. You need 3 members to have an "official" gang, but you can also have any group of people as an "unofficial" gang.

16. I want to use magic. Is there any getting around this?

No, no, no, no, NO! No magic. To reiterate: NO MAGIC EVER EVER EVER. This game takes place on Earth in a timeline that slightly diverges from the real world. Is there magic in real life? NO! So, no magic. None. Ever.

17. Can my character play a central role in the setting and/or game?

At the beginning, no. In the grand scheme of things, your character doesn't matter to anyone. You have to work from the ground up, starting off as nothing more than a piece of streetwalking scum. But if you play your cards right, if you do some super creative, brilliant things with your character and if you RP your ass off to change things around you, hey, you'll be remembered for your deeds.

18. Can I make a major NPC?

Short answer, no. Most NPCs are already found in the Fallout world, or have been carefully crafted by GMs to fit into the setting. If you still think you have a really really really super-awesome-good idea for an NPC, you can try talking it over with the GMs. However, if on the off chance your idea is accepted, we have the right to change your idea to our liking. Don't come to us with ideas every 5 minutes, though. We have enough ideas for this game on our own.

19. What happens if I don't respect the GM? Do I get pwned?

Yes, you get PWNED. There is zero tolerance for disrespect towards a GM. You can intelligently debate with them, but if you're a smartass or if you're just throwing insults because you're a moron, you WILL get banned. You want to start a flame war? Get your ass out of this game.

20. So I'm in New Reno. Should I really watch my back?

Yes. If you don't, someone or something will probably kill you and then feast on what's left of your carcass. Or.. something of that sort. Just don't be a moron.
