New DVD Shrink 3.1.3

DVD Shrink's author makes the last bug fixes before he stops (as he has said) the development of DVD Shrink in version 3.1.x.

DVD Shrink 3.1.3 is now releashed. You can now select the burning speed. Various Nero initialization problems are now solved, as well as some preview bugs.

I'd like to thank dvdshrink for all the great work he has done until now and the work that he continues to do, by fixing the last bugs this amazing software has.

Yes, we were suprised. Finally DVD Shrink gets to version 3.1!
The new version already lands in my HD and the guide should be available very soon!

Changes: (according to doom9.org):
"DVD Shrink 3.1 has an improved GUI, improved preview (including audio and full screen mode), burning and disc image creation is supported (requires Nero 5+), layer break removal and automatic audio and subtitle stream selection via preferences has been added, and it is possible to select the default playback stream in re-author mode."

Macrovision sues 321 Studios

Macrovision, the company who develops copy protection mechanisms found on most of the DVD-Video discs and commercial VHS tapes, has sued 321 Studios, software company who has developed various DVD backup tools, most notably DVD X Copy series.

Macrovision charges that 321 Studios' DVD X Copy tools infringe with Macrovision's patented copy-protection technology and also violates the DMCA law. The charge under DMCA legislation is interesting as DMCA states that circumventing "effective" copy protection measures is illegal. But when most of the world is buying perfectly legally (not U.S. though) "modded" DVD players that circumvent Macrovision's bit code copy protection (and of course region codes as well, but they don't relate to this lawsuit) and virtually every school kid knows how to use any freely-distributed DVD ripper to get rid of the Macrovision, the claim that their weak bit setting copy protection mechanism could be considered "effective" is bit misleading.

"321 Studios infringes Macrovision's intellectual property by offering products that enable users to make unauthorized copies that contain our patented process and sometimes illegally bypass our copy protection system," says Macrovision CEO Bill Krepick.

My comment: Finally the wise man that makes the laws does no longer exist. Now the laws are made to help all these powerfull companies that are paid to do nothing. Macrovision was broken long before CSS was, it only prevents DVD to VHS copies. Many other programs inlcuding TV-Out programs, rippers, copiers, on-the-fly decrypters remove Macrovision, and now they decided to sue 321 Studios? Something is wrong with this. I think we should all fight to protect our rights.

Sony quits DVD±R manufacturing

The DVD recordable market is evolving at a breath taking speed. The speed of the drives is increasing, dual layer technology is on its way and the next generation formats are already specified. During the 2003 prices have sunk and DVD-R may well be one of the hit products for this Christmas.

Now Sony drops the bomb as they announced to stop DVD recordable drive production and start outsourcing drives from Taiwanese manufacturers. Sony was one of the largest drive manufacturers. It is predicted that the most likely partner would be LiteOn.

As Sony already gives up on competing with the Taiwanese and Korean manufacturers, ti will be interesting to see what will other the other well branded companies do. Especially it is interesting to see how can the Pioneer take the heat?

Shrink part of nero

It looks like the rumors are true. I just had a chance to update my nero and play with it a bit. It looks like they got the creator of dvdShrink on board with them now. If you got nero 6 update it to 6.3.0.0 and play around in the dvd section and you will see really fast what I mean. It looks pretty good so far.
