NAME
       - Monitors Network targeted	systems status and On-Line Diagnostic
       software

SYNOPSIS
DESCRIPTION
is the system status monitor which will check whether the target sys‐
tems, specified by the user, to be monitored are up and have online
diagnostic software installed and running. If a system crashes, hangs
or the diagnostic software is shutdown on any of the systems being mon‐
itored, an event will be generated by this monitor. This is a polling-
       only monitor.

The event generation will be handled via Event monitoring system (EMS).

The monitor will perform the tasks by:

       1. Sending a request to a diagmond daemon, running on the target sys‐
tem. This daemon is part of the Diagnostic software. The daemon will
respond	with its version to the monitor if it is running or else the
request will fail. The monitor will analyze the status of the request
       and take appropriate action.

       2. Issuing command /etc/ping programmatically to the target system to
check the state of the network. The command sends data packages to the
target system, which then returns to the monitor, thereby checking for
the reliability and speed of the data transfer between the host and the
target system.	The command reports percentage of packets lost during
the data transfer. The monitor will analyze this data and take	appro‐
       priate action.

When the monitor finds any of the following conditions, it will flag
       that system to be DOWN:

       - Unable to resolve the system name to IP address

       - Online Diagnostic software not present on the system

       - Online Diagnostic software not running on the system

       - Network service is down or the response is poor

For a system to be considered UP, the Online Diagnostic	software must
respond successfully to the monitor's query. When finds that a particu‐
lar system is DOWN, it will still keep continuously poling the tageted
system. When the monitor finds the system is UP again, an event will be
generated to inform the user and start monitoring the system.

   Options
       does not support any options.

The group and the system's name to be monitored can be specified in the
       monitor's config file (/var/stm/config/tools/monitor/sysstat_em.cfg)

   Severity Levels
All the events generated by the monitor are assigned a severity level.
These severity levels reflect the potential impact of	the event on
system operation. Monitoring requests are created based on the severity
       levels.

An event that will or has already caused data loss, system down
time, or other loss of service. Immediate action is required to
correct the problem. The network connection between the host and
the target system to be monitored is experiencing problems or
may be down. The system might have crashed or may be hung.

An event that may cause data loss, system down time, or other
loss of	service if left uncorrected. The problem should be
repaired as soon as possible. The network connection between the
host and the target system to be monitored is down.

An event that could escalate to a more serious condition if not
corrected. The problem should be repaired at a convenient
time. The	services to resolve the the target systemname to IP
	      address may be unavailable.

An event that will not likely escalate to a more serious	condi‐
tion if let uncorrected. The problem can be repaired at a conve‐
nient time. System operation will not be interrupted and	normal
use of the hardware can continue.

An event that occurs as part of the normal operation like previ‐
ously this system was not responding to the monitor's request
now started responding	as it is brought up now. No action is
	      required.

   Application Usage
This monitor will be deprecated on new server models. Please use System
       Management Homepage (see hpsmh(1M)).

DEPENDENCIES
Event Monitoring Services (EMS) must be installed and running.
