NAME
sfmconfig - manages the components of System Fault Management (SFM)

SYNOPSIS

DESCRIPTION
The utility can be used to configure the SFM components with the help
of a set of commands. If the command is invoked without any arguments,
its supported commands and their usage are displayed.	If the command
is invoked with a single command, but without any options or values,
then it displays the usage for that command.

   Commands Supported by sfmconfig
These are the currently supported commands.

The command (invoked via ensures that the SFM's configurable parame‐
	      ters can be changed dynamically.

The user makes changes to the configuration file and executes
this command with the absolute file name of the configuration
file. This command informs SFM that a configurable parameter is
modified. SFM then reads the modified configuration file and
	      immediately uses the new configuration.

The command (invoked via is used to	throttle events of specific
event category/provider name/event id combinations. Whenever the
user is not interested in receiving events of a particular event
category/event id or provider	name/event id, this command is
used to disable the generation of events.

Note: The command does not apply to PA-RISC-based systems.

The command (invoked via manages the Filter Metadata	(FMD) reposi‐
tory. Only the administrator or root user can run this command.
The FMD repository contains WQL/CQL strings.

These strings represent filters.	There are two types of filters
	      in the FMD repository:

	      · HP-defined filters
	      · Admin-defined filters.

HP-defined filters are	defined by HP, and are present in the
repository at the time of installation. The administrator can
only enable or	disable HP-defined filters. Only HP can add,
delete, modify a HP-defined filter by publishing a patch. HP-
defined filters	log HP-defined subscriptions and HP-Known sub‐
scriptions in the Local	Event Archive. These subscriptions
ensure that all important events are logged in the Local Event
	      Archive.

Admin-defined filters are created, deleted, or modified by the
	      administrator using the command

The command provides a number of sub-commands to help the admin‐
	      istrator maintain the FMD repository.

Lists the filters present in the repository.
The type of filter is specified using the option to
list	either HP-defined or Admin-defined filters, or
all the filters in the repository. All users can
			  run the command.

Adds an Admin-defined filter in the repository.
A unique-ID is assigned automatically to the filter
that is created. The filter that is added is dis‐
played when the administrator runs the command.

Deletes an Admin-defined filter from the repository.
If an Admin-defined filter that is enabled in the
FMD repository is deleted, the corresponding in the
Common Information Model Object Manager (CIMOM)
			  repository is also deleted.

Modifies the Admin-defined filters in the repository.
However, the name and properties of a filter	cannot
be modified. The modified filter is replicated in
			  the FMD repository.

Changes the state of the filter from the DISABLE	state to the
	      ENABLE
			  state in the FMD repository.

Both	HP-defined and Admin-defined	filters can be
enabled. When HP-defined filter is enabled, HP-
Known subscriptions are created for the enabled fil‐
ter.	When the HP-defined filter or the	Admin-
defined filter is enabled, a corresponding filter is
			  created in the CIMOM repository.

Changes the state of a filter from ENABLE state to the DISABLE
	      state.
Both	HP-defined and Admin-defined	filters can be
disabled. If an Admin-defined filter is disabled,
the corresponding is deleted from the CIMOM reposi‐
tory. If an	Admin-defined filter has any user-
defined subscriptions, the filter cannot be removed
			  from the CIMOM repository.

Exports an Admin-defined filter to a user file.

These filters can be imported to the FMD repository.
The export command	enables the administrator to
define the filters at one node and apply them to all
			  the managed nodes.

The import command imports any Admin-defined filter from a user
	      file
			  to the FMD repository.

The command (invoked via is used to switch between EMS framework and
SFM indication framework. In the EMS framework mode, EMS Hard‐
ware Monitors are enabled and SFM does not monitor any devices.
In SFM Indication framework mode, the EMS Hardware Monitors are
shutdown and SFM monitors the devices.

The command (invoked via is used to set the operation status of a
device to OK state during runtime. Whenever an error is detected
during run-time, the operational status of the device is changed
from OK	state to an error state. When this error is fixed by
replacing the device, the status has to be set back to OK. For
some of the devices, it is done automatically by the generation
of event. For others, it has to be manually set back	to OK
	      state.

The command (invoked via is used	to send a test event to check
whether the indication providers are reporting error correctly.
If the indication providers are working properly, the event
details of the test event are displayed.	This is the quickest
way to ensure that the indication providers are converting the
events generated by EMS monitors to indications.

Note: The command does not apply to PA-RISC-based systems.

   Options and Arguments
Provides help information on the command.

This command is used to refresh the disk cache. It invalidates the
existing disk cache and triggers rebuilding the disk inventory.
	    refreshdiskcache supports the following option

The device type for which the cache has to be rebuilt.
Currently this command supports only Disk for 11i v3 release.

Modifies configuration settings of the SFM providers.
However, a valid	XML configuration file is required for the SFM
	    providers.

This option throttles events generated by a device.

Disables generation of events that match throttling criteria.

Enables generation of events that match throttling criteria.

Displays list of currently active device throttling criteria.

	    eventcategory
can be one of the following numerical values:

2	Processor events generated by the monitor.
3	Memory events generated by the monitor.
4	System hardware events generated by the monitor.

Specifies the provider name to be used in device throttling crite‐
	    ria.

Specifies the event id to be used in device throttling criteria.

The command supports the following options.

Specifies the type of the filter.
It can take one of the following values:

		   HP HP-defined type filter
		   ADMIN Admin-defined type filter
ALL Both HP-defined and Admin-defined type.

Specifies the name of the filter.
It is mandatory to specify this value in the and commands.

Specifies the state of the filter.
The filter can be in any of the following states:

ENABLE Enables the filter. Correspondingly, the filter
in the CIMOM is also enabled When a filter is
in the ENABLE state, it can be enumerated.

		   DISABLE Disables the filter.

	    Filter query string

	    Query language.
It can be either: WQL or CQL.

The CIMOM namespace to which the filter belongs.

Provides the description about the filter.

Specifies the uid of the filter.
This id is automatically generated when the filter is cre‐
ated. The id is one of the primary keys of the filter in
the	repository. This uid of an Admin-defined filter is
		   always greater than 10000.

Identifies the files that can be used with the
import and export commands. This option represents the name
of the import file and export file , respectively.

Switches from EMS monitors to SFM IndicationProvider:

	    Displays the current diagnostics mode.

Switches the diagnostics mode to "EMS". In this mode, EMS Hard‐
	    ware
Monitors are enabled and SysFaultMgmt does not monitor any
		 devices.

Switches from EMS Hardware Monitors to SFM IndicationProvider.

The command supports the following options.

	    List All Devices:
Enumerates a list of devices in the system where setstatus
		   is supported.

	    List operational status.

	    Reset operational status.

Options to list and reset operational status
			  require the following arguments:

		   which specifies the
device_type from one of the fol‐
			  lowing values:

A specific instance of Fan or
			  Cabinet Blower
				 An instance of Bulk Power
				 Supply.

An instance	of Memory Board or
			  Memory Chip.

			  An instance of Processor Chip.

			  An instance of Voltage Sensors

An instance of Thermal or Cooling
			  Sensors

			  Specify
			  physi‐
			  cal
			  loca‐
			  tion of
			  a
			  device.

		   Sends test
		   event

		   Sends a pro‐
		   cessor test
		   event.

		   Sends a memory
		   test event.

		   Sends a back‐
		   bone test
		   event.

		   Sends a test
		   event using
		   each of the
		   mentioned mon‐
		   itors.

EXAMPLES
   configchange
       Modifies configuration
       settings of the SFM
       providers, given a valid
       XML configuration file.
       The user runs this command
       for the settings to take
       effect:

       For example the configura‐
       tion file for logging can
be found in The file spec‐
       ifies the logging thresh‐
       old severity, and the
       location of the log-file .
       The contents of the file
       are as follows:

       <SFMConfig>
	   <LoggerConfig>
		 <Severity> WARNING </Severity>
		 <Target> /var/opt/sfm/log/sfm.log </Target>
	    </LoggerConfig>
       </SFMConfig>

       This file can be modified
       to change the	threshold
       severity level and/or tar‐
       get. The contents of the
       file after changing the
       severity level	to ERROR,
       will be as follows:

       <SFMConfig>
	   <LoggerConfig>
		 <Severity> ERROR </Severity>
		 <Target> /var/opt/sfm/log/sfm.log </Target>
	    </LoggerConfig>
       </SFMConfig>

   devicethrottle
       To stop	delivery of all
       events being generated by
       the cmc monitor

       Note: Only delivery of
       events are stopped. This
       does not affect the change
       in operational status.

   fmdcontrol
       To add	an Admin-defined
       enabled	filter in the
       root/cimv2 namespace:

       To delete a filter:

       To modify a filter:

   switchdiag
       The following command will
       switch diagnostics mode to
       "EMS":

       The following command will
       switch diagnostics mode to
       "SFM":

   setstatus
       To list all devices sup‐
       ported by setstatus

       To list operational status
       for 'Power' device

   sendtestevent
       Generates a test processor
       event:

       Generates a test memory
       event:

       Generates a test backbone
       device event:

       Generates a test event for
       processor, memory and
       backbone.

RETURN VALUE
       The command returns:

		0 On success.
	      <>0 Otherwise it
		   returns a non-
		   zero value.

WARNINGS
       The command checks for
       authorization before	a
command is run.	If a com‐
       mand is aborted during
       execution, the FMD reposi‐
       tory and the CIMOM reposi‐
       tory revert to the initial
       state.

       NOTE: This utility is used
       for administration of Sys‐
       tem Fault Management
       providers and hardware
       monitors. Users should
       use caution while adminis‐
       tering	options in this
       command.
