SETMON(1G) SETMON(1G)

NAME
setmon - a monitor configuration tool

SYNOPSIS
       setmon [<options>] [devicefile]

DESCRIPTION
setmon is used to inquire and modify the video timing mode for a speci‐
fied graphics device. When changing the monitor mode, users may select
from among a list of available monitor modes. The monitor mode is
described by its display resolution, refresh rate (Hz), and a brief
       description.

On systems where multiple graphics displays are configured for use the
devicefile is used to identify the graphics device. The devicefile
will default to "/dev/gvid" for OEM graphics devices or "/dev/crt" for
HP Visualize graphics devices. Users may want to use the sam interface
(pre HP-UX 11.31 release) or the smh interface (HP-UX 11.31 and later)
to identify the mapping between graphics devices and device files. In
sam/smh	go to the "Display" -> "X Server Configuration" panel, and use
the "Actions" -> "Describe Screen" menu item.

Invoking setmon without the -s or -r options will cause an interactive
session	to be invoked. In the interactive session, a list of potential
monitor modes will be displayed and the user will be allowed to	select
one to	apply. The user will be asked to confirm his choice before
       restarting the X server.

When a monitor mode is selected, it is recorded to be used each time
the X server is started up. For OEM graphics devices the mode is
recorded in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file. For HP Visualize graphics
devices the mode will be written into the system stable storage.

OEM graphics devices will use the Extended Display Identification Data
(EDID [TM]) along with the Display Data Channel (DDC [TM]) interface if
it is supported by your monitor. This mechanism is used to identify
the timings and video modes that your monitor supports. The list of
available monitor modes may change as a result of this.

If EDID/DDC is not available, setmon will offer a list of predefined
default modes. Not all of these may be supported by	your monitor.
Choosing an unsupported mode may result in a bad or no visible image on
your monitor. Consult your monitor manual for supported video modes.

OPTIONS
       setmon recognizes the following options:

-p Print out the detailed timing information for the current or
	       selected monitor mode.

-r Report the current monitor setting and all available choices.

       -s index
Sets monitor mode to index. This option bypasses the confirma‐
tion dialog and installs the specified video mode.

       -v Verbose, print extra information.

For OEM graphics cards, the following options are also available:

-C num Return information about a specific connector on the graphics
	       card.

-M Return the monitor information for the device specified. -M
will cause other options to be ignored.

-N Return only the name of the device specified. -N will cause
	       other options to be ignored.

For HP Visualize graphics cards, the following options are also avail‐
       able:

-t This option makes the new monitor mode	temporary. A	system
reboot will restore the previous monitor mode.

EXAMPLES
These examples	assume	that "/dev/gvid" points to a valid graphics
       device.

To invoke an interactive session type:
	   setmon /dev/gvid

To change the current monitor mode to entry three type:
	   setmon -s3 /dev/gvid

To report the current monitor setting type:
	   setmon -r /dev/gvid

Here is the "setmon -r" output (assuming /dev/gvid maps to an ATI
       Radeon 7500 device):

The ATI Radeon 7500 QW graphics device connector 2 supports the follow‐
       ing monitor entries.

Entry Width Height Hz Derivation and Recommended Usage
	  ----- ----- ------ --- --------------------------------
	     1 1024 768 60 DDC defined, Flat Panel
	     2 1024 768 70 DDC defined
	     3 1024 768 75 DDC defined
	     4 1152 864 75 DDC defined
	 ->  5	 1280	1024   60 DDC defined, Flat Panel
	     6 1280	1024 75 DDC defined

The current monitor selection is entry 5.

The "->" marker identifies the current monitor selection. The deriva‐
tion column indicates	that these timings vere obtained via the DDC
interface from your monitor and are thus supported by your monitor.

WARNING
On HP Visualize devices this command fails if the device is locked.
This will occur when the CDE login screen is visible and the user has
       not logged in.
