CONFIG_ANONFTP(8) BSD System Manager's Manual CONFIG_ANONFTP(8)NAMEconfig_anonftp - enable anonymous ftp
SYNOPSISconfig_anonftpDESCRIPTION
The config_anonftp program creates an anonymous ftp directory and an ac-
count for the anonymous ftp user (thus enabling anonymous ftp access).
The config_anonftp program accepts no arguments.
You can disable anonymous ftp by removing the ftp user from the passwd(5)
file (e.g., with a command like ``rmuser ftp'').
Setting up an anonymous ftp server is a potentially large security haz-
ard, so it should not be taken lightly. The config_anonftp program will
set up a simple anonymous ftp configuration with a readable ~ftp/pub di-
rectory and a non readable ~ftp/hidden directory. World readable files
placed in either directory will be available for anonymous ftp transfers.
Files placed in the `hidden' directory may only be transferred if the
names are known (or guessed!).
The config_anonftp will also create an ~ftp/etc/pwd.db file with no users
defined in it. This prevents the ftpd(8) process from generating errors
due to the absence of the ~ftp/etc/pwd.db file.
No uploads are permitted in the configuration created by config_anonftp.
If you wish to enable uploading, it is recommended that you learn the ins
and outs of the fancy anonymous ftp server supplied with BSD/OS by read-
ing the ftpd(8) and ftpconfig(5) man pages.
