CHAP_MD5(8) BSD System Manager's Manual CHAP_MD5(8)

NAME
     chap_md5 - preform MD5 CHAP authentication

SYNOPSIS
     chap_md5
     chap_md5 user id
     chap_md5 user id -v

DESCRIPTION
The chap_md5 utility is expected to be called by the ppp(8) command. See
the chap-script option in ppp.sys(5) for a description of the arguments
     to the chap_md5 utility.

SECRETS
The shared secrets are stored in the file /etc/chap_md5_secrets, which
has lines one of the following formats:

	  name:format:secret:
	  name:challenge:format:secret:
	  name:response:format:secret:

     name	The user name.
format	The format the secret is stored in, either hex or ascii should
		be used.
challenge This string is literal.	This implies the following secret is
only valid for verifying a challenge.
response This string is literal. This implies the following secret is
only valid for generating a response to a challenge. The
challenge and response keys allow for mutual authentication in
which each direction uses a distinct secret.
secret	The actual secret. If the format is hex then the secret is an
even number of bytes from the set [0-9a-f]. The secret is
converted from hex to an actual byte string before use. If
the format is ascii then the secret is the actual secret. Use
		``\\'' to enter a ``\'' and ``\:'' to enter a ``:''.

FILES
